The Mount Union Women’s Basketball team knew they would be in for a tough battle against the Marietta Pioneers, the 22nd ranked team in the latest D3hoops.com poll. The Raiders were up for the challenge but fell just short to the Pioneers 70-67 at the MAAC. The Raiders found themselves trailing by seven points with 2:30 remaining in the contest but stormed back to tie the game. After a missed free throw by the Pioneers, junior guardEmma Cannonfired up a half-court shot at the buzzer for the tie, but came up short.

Cannon led the Raiders with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Cannon also shot an efficient 60% from the floor. Sarah Meech added a career-high 14 points for the Raiders with 10 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. Cannon and Meech accounted for 16 of the Raiders 20 fourth quarter points. Maddy Miles also added 9 points off the Raider bench. The Raiders outscored the Pioneers 26-20 in bench points. Mount Union also outrebounded Marietta 40-37.

The Pioneers were led by Mackenzie Wilson who finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She also added 3 steals and 3 blocks to her night. Erin Hahn finished with 15 points and 5 steals. The Pioneers were very active defensively as they forced 19 Mount Union turnovers. Marietta struggled shooting throughout the night, shooting just 40% overall. However, they would shoot 8-11 in the fourth quarter, including 3-3 from the three-point line.

The game was a contested one throughout, particularly in the first half. The Raiders found themselves trailing 32-30 at halftime after being tied at 15 after the first quarter. The second half remained just as close, with Marietta only leading 50-47 entering the fourth quarter and both teams scoring 20 points each. There were also ten ties throughout the game. Marietta led for the entire second half, pushing their lead to as much as 8 points. The Raiders would continue to fight through with the game coming down to the final shot. The Raiders, who shot 45% from the floor, lost to the Pioneers for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Mount Union swept the season series against Marietta last season and later defeated them in the OAC Quarterfinals.

With the win, the 22nd ranked Pioneers improve to 13-1 on the season and 6-1 in conference play. They have won seven straight games. Meanwhile, the Raiders have now lost three straight games and drop to 4-7 on the season with a 1-4 conference record. They will look to end that losing streak on Saturday as they play host to the Otterbein Cardinals in the first game of a basketball doubleheader at the MAAC.
