Covid-19 Campus Update

The University of Mount Union is currently sitting at 35 active cases, 79 recovered cases and 114 total cases.  

The end of the first semester is exactly three weeks away and many are still skeptical if students are to return come second semester. 

Early last month, the university dispersed a mass email informing students and faculty that random sample testing would begin in the late days of October. As seen with any sample testing, the more testing in a location ultimately leads to the discovery of more cases. However, the university has aspirations of returning again in the spring.  

“Surveillance testing will continue weekly through the end of the fall semester.” The university email states. “The institution will be prepared to continue this testing in a similar fashion during the spring semester.” 

The official title of the safe learning guide that Mount Union has and continues to adhere to is the Fall 2020 Responsible Reopening Guide which outlines safe reopening policies and expectations. Mount Union has yet to address the possibility of a spring reopening guide to the public yet or state any changes to occur come the return of students and faculty after winter break.  

Ohio’s active cases have now broken the third record high reporting as of Wednesday per Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s address. DeWine alluded to the possibility of enforcing further state-wide mandates to hinder the climbing cases but has not done so since July where he banned the serving of all alcohol in bars after 10 p.m. Whether or not this will affect schools, it is certainly something to keep an eye on as this situation changes daily.
