The Raider Student Media staff had the opportunity to work on Raider Record this past Friday with Mount Union’s own, RJ.

RJ is a creative and talented song writer. She wrote the music and lyrics for “Fall Rain and the Smell of Vanilla”, the song she performed on Raider Record Room. Raider Student Media’s General Manager, Vinny Camma, accompanied her on the guitar for the performance.

RJ’s music background begins with her grandmother who started her on piano lessons. As she got older, she began listening to her dad’s music. She was inspired to write her own music.

RJ said the beginning stages of writing songs was a lot of “writing stuff down and throwing stuff away and forgetting lyrics.”

RJ never gave up on song writing and finds herself immersed by music frequently. She is a member of the band and choir at Mount Union. She writes music in her dorm when she gets the opportunity.

“I want to write about how I’m feeling, RJ said, “I do songs with a lot of metaphors. And I was like I just want to say words and those words can make a song; any words can make a song.”

Hear RJ’s interview with Raider Record Room host Iris Fae O'Brien, and listen to her original song “Fall Rain and the Smell of Vanilla”, on Season 3, Episode 2 of Raider Record Room.
